Firecracker is a psychotic masterpiece of audio-visual hysteria. This is the film David Lynch wishes he was still capable of making. When meek and tender Jimmy White (Jak Kendall) escapes briefly from his emotionally abusive brother David and steals away to a travelling carnival, he develops a keen interest in the shows main attraction, singer Sandra. When he decides to befriend Sandra, he is led into a world of murder, bondage and eventually redemption. The towns sheriff Ed (Susan Traylor) becomes suspicious when David goes missing and begins to unravel one of the strangest mysteries that any small town has ever pieced together. Based on true events and shot in the actual town of Wamego Kansas, this film proves that truth is often stranger than fiction. The cast is led by the outstanding Karen Black (Easy Rider, Trilogy of Terror) who plays a dual role as Eleanor White, devoted mother and stern Christian, as well as sultry carnival singer Sandra. Also playing a dual role is rock singer Mike Patton (Faith No More, Fantomas, Mr Bungle) who gives a very powerful performance as both David White, a sadistic son and brother and Frank, an evil carnie who keeps his tragic star Sandra in a state of perpetual submission. Dancing between two plotlines tied together by a clever sting, Firecracker keeps you thinking until the very last frame. Director Steve Balderson was clearly channelling if not possessed by the spirit of Todd Browning. Firecracker ***spam*** has the movement and pacing of a ballet, each scene flowing from one surreal landscape to the next
